Gordon N. Ray, a graduate of Indiana University, was closely associated with the life and work of William Makepeace Thackeray. His four volume edition of the Letters and private papers appeared in 1945-1946 and his two volume biography in 1954-1955. From 1963 to 1985 Ray was president of the John Simon Guggenheim Foundation. The publishing firm of Smith, Elder, and Co. was founded by George Smith (1789–1846) and Alexander Elder (1790–1876). Upon the death of his father, George Smith (son) took control and under his stewardship, the company flourished. Its first major success was the publication of Charlotte Brontë's Jane Eyre in 1847, under the pseudonym of "Currer Bell."
